Mr. Stein is writer for a German magazine. He is very interested in Patrick and Patrick’s endearment for his forefather’s land. He is large, mysterious, and has that something about him that makes him look as if he is a villain that one would see in a Hollywood movie production.
Ongello is Christine’s college roommate. Her family has their roots in the Mississippi Delta. She has always lived in Mississippi and has a family oral history handed down from times before the Civil War.

Private Charlie Hurt is young man from the past. He lived in the Hatchie Hills before being drafted to fight in World War II.
Daisy Bell Rutherford was in school with Charlie Hurt and she was the paternal grandmother of Patrick.
Clem Rutherford is Daisy Bell’s brother. He still lives near the land on which he was raised in the Hatchie Hills of Northeast Mississippi.
